The iPhone’s Installer.app has been updated to 3.0, and features a much better organizational system than the previous “everything listed in a flat list that takes forever to scroll through”. Not only are there sections now, you can “Update All”, and the packaging backend is improved as well. You can’t install this directly on your phone, but instead you have to install the older version, then update via installer itself. If you have 1.1.1, you’ll have to jailbreak first, then transfer it on manually. However, it does detect what firmware version you’re running and only displays the apps that run fine on yours. DOT.TUNES has released two plugins that bring wifi (not EDGE) streaming to both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, respectively. DOT.TUNES basically turns your Mac into a web server for streaming iTunes content across your local network or across the internet. The two new plugins optimize the interface for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. With either you get access to your playlists, artists, albums, etc.

Of course any time you run your Mac as a server there are potential security concerns, but DOT.TUNES appears to be a great way to get iTunes content onto your iPhone or iPod Touch over the internet. They’ve even set up a demo server that will show you how it works (click here for the iPhone interface).

DOT.TUNES 4 itself is a free download, but the iPhone and iPod Touch plugins are $20 each.

For all of you who have been holding off on paying iPhone SIM Free $60-$100, good news. The iPhone Dev Team has announced AnySIM 1.1. According to the announcement by netkas, the software has been tested with both 1.0.2 and 1.1.1. AnySIM offers a free unlocking solution for iPhone users and apparently, if I’m reading this correctly, does NOT fix baseband problems from earlier releases. This is meant for “virgin” locked phones only. Download your copy here. Be aware that as AnySIM works, it switches off your WiFi until you reboot. Also, this is NOT intended for phones that will be updated. Do not unlock 1.0.2 and then update to 1.1.1. Updating a locked 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 will relock your iPhone. The team is testing a 1.1.1 restore on 1.1.1 unlocks right now. Remember guys: although the software here has been tested to make sure it avoids corruption–it does not hurt NVRAM/seczone–it is very new and has not had a lot of field testing yet.

And now, someone’s cooked up an iPhone version of that same plugin, where you simply install the WP plugin on your blog (for WordPress 2.2.1), and instantly you can see all your posts formatted specifically for the iPhone. Instead of creating a whole other, “mobile” version of your site, you can simply put in this plugin, and you can get a link that will reformat your content for the iPhone or iPod touch.
If you run a WordPress blog or site and were thinking about creating a version of it for the iPhone or iPod touch, your work is done. Download the iWPhone plugin from Content.Robot, install it, and you’re set.

The iphoneSimFree team released version 1.6 of its SimFree application, which not only unlocks the new 1.1.1 firmware, but claims to be able to “unbrick” phones rendered inoperable by the upgrade. On the iphoneSimFree website, the proud claim is made that “iphoneSimFree can FIX all phones that anySim and iUnlock bricked with the 1.1.1 update.”

The brick-fix requires users to downgrade their iPhone’s firmware to 1.0.2, and does require the user to pay the asking price of $100 for the software — a hefty price compared to anySIM’s cost of “free,” but still cheaper than a new iPhone. The iphoneSimFree team makes a point to thank the iPhone Dev Team on their page as well, so there seems to be no signs of animosity for their competition.

LiNk : iPhone SimFree

We were invited by iPhone / iPod touch file system hacker Niacin (who you might also know for his PSP and MSN TV Linux cluster hacks, etc.) and Dre to test out their new v1.1.1 file system hack. We know the whole v1.1.1 hacking thing has been massively confusing even to folks like us, so here’s a quick n’ dirty timeline to bring you up to date.

1. Apple releases iPhone, which was obviously cracked six ways from Sunday.
2. Through firmwares 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 Apple does not block these hacks in any way.
3. Firmware v1.1.1 is released for iPhone and iPod touch, which completely locks out file system access (and thus 3rd party software).
4. Awkward silence from Apple fans and the dev community as everyone ponders how to crack the new file system protections.
5. Hackers dinopio, edgan discover the symlink hack, which takes v1.0.2 iPhones up to v1.1.1 with read / write file system access. In other words, the hack only works on v1.0.2 iPhones (not the iPod touch) when being upgraded to v1.1.1, and still doesn’t grant the ability to execute loaded programs.
6. The next version of dinopio & co.’s symlink hack (which hasn’t yet been released to the public) grants the coveted execute privilege (so you can run those 3rd party apps), and enables another hack (by pumpkin) to make the new SpringBoard (the application launcher) recognize the freshly recompiled iPhone apps.
7. Hacker Niacin (aka toc2rta) and Dre claim they’ve managed to combine the symlink hack with a TIFF vulnerability found in the v1.1.1 firmware’s mobile Safari, which grants access to the file system. This is the hack we’re testing here.
   Note: Due to the nature of this hack, it’s to be considered ephemeral. Apple needs only to patch the TIFF vulnerability and file system access on v1.1.1 is out, with the touch and iPhone back to their previously not-too-hackable state.

And the result thus far? We’ve tested the solution, and we can confirm file system read+write access via the TIFF exploit on an iPod touch, meaning loading a simple image file on your v1.1.1 device gives full root file system access!

Caveats:

• The release has not at this time been released to the public. Niacin claims that will happen in the near future, possibly later this morning.
• Thus far the hack isn’t entirely without issues. We’re still trying to determine exactly what’s what, but we’ve lost read and write access unexpectedly. This may or may not be a problem with our machine or device, though, and not necessarily the hack.
• We did not test this method on an iPhone, but technically there should be no difference in the effect. Side note: your v1.1.1 iPhone would, at this time, need to be activated to load the TIFF. (How else are you gonna load it?) This is supposedly being worked on.

The iPhone/iTouch Dev guys have been hard at work for weeks and have finally managed to jailbreak 1.1.1. Right now, they’re nowhere near releasing a general-use tool but the first steps have been made.
So what does this jailbreak mean?

• Third Party apps run. Kind of. We probably have to recompile many of them for the new frameworks because many of them crash.

• Springboard no longer recognizes DisplayOrder.plist. And the list of “whitelisted” apps (that is, the official Applications including Safari, Photos, Calendar, etc) seems to be hard-coded into Springboard.app

• The iPhone has been activated via third-party workarounds.

• The 1.1.1 binaries barely work with 1.0.2 — at least not well enough to run the music store without major hacking.

• The Mobile Terminal App works on 1.1.1.

• The entire bsd suite still works — as do standard command-line utilities compiled for ARM.

• 1.1.1 references both com.apple.mobile.radio and com.apple.mobile.nike.

The jailbreak method is nowhere near ready for prime time. So please be patient

There are rumors doing the round that apple will allow 3rd party application developers to deliver their content through Apple’s Tune. Obviously the iPhone will only be able to run certified applications. Apple is known to be hiring platform developer for this job.

With EA making games for iPod Touch it seems quite likely that they would be doing the same for iPhone sooner or latter.

As of today there are 2 hacks available on the net for the iPhone 1.1.1 firmware :

1. TIFF Exploit : Basically, opening a carefully crafted TIFF image will crash mobile safari, causing a buffer overflow and allow for arbitrary code execution. This same exploit was used more than 1.5 years ago to crack the PSP firmware.
2. iPhuc method : This hack gives access to full directory with read / write access but still some  paths don’t have write access.

But till now these method can’t unlock the iPhone,so you are better of using the 1.0.2 firmware.

Apple’s latest iPhone moves (deActivating the iPhone)may have earned it a new class-action law suit. Some people had even posted this on the Apple’s iPhone forum (no surprises here that the mods deleted the posts asap ). But Apple might just get away with this because of the long pages of legal material that they have crammed up in their manuals and online TOS. iWonder when will people actually stop buying their products(they do look cool but sometimes these are not just worth it).
